An alternative-specific design is one where certain attributes or attribute levels only appear for some of the alternatives. For example, if conducting a study of transportation choice between buses and cars, the bus alternative may have an attribute relating to crowding, whereas the car attribute may have an attribute relating to maintenance costs.
As an example, the first two questions from a very simple alternative specific design of the car market are shown below.
