A variable in a data file that has been created by a person either analyzing the data or programming the questionnaire. For example, a variable that contains the number of different products that a consumer has purchased in the previous week will typically be a constructed variable (created by summing the answers of a whole lot of separate questions, each of which indicates whether a person did or did not buy a product).
