Creating New Variables by Creating Filters

Data analysis tools that provide graphical user interfaces for filtering will often save the filter as a new variable in the data set, which can be used in other analyses. This is usually the fastest and easiest way of creating binary variables using boolean expressions (e.g., Males in Maine who either own a cat or a dog).
