Weighting that involves two or more categorical adjustment variables is typically known as rim weighting in commercial research and raking in government research. The term “rim” refers to the numbers being on the edge (rim) of the table, as opposed to the cells in the middle of the table (see the image below).
Rims can also be made up of multiple variables. For example, interlocking age and sex as shown below on the left.
